“For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream, in the same simple way as I dream about the black dots representing towns and villages on a map”
Artificial light can disturb natural body rhythms in both humans and animals. This can result in sleep deprivation, fatigue, headaches, stress, anxiety, and other health problems.
When we don’t get affected by artificial light, our bodies produce more of the hormone melatonin that causes us to sleep better and increases our overall health.
Light pollution can disorient animals and cause problems when they try to navigate in the wild. Many species use the horizon and stars for orientation.
With only the help of natural light, like the moon, turtles and their hatchlings have a better chance of surviving and finding the way back to the ocean and their group.
More than 80% of the world and more than 99% of the U.S. and European populations live under light-polluted skies.
Without light pollution, we get to see more of the incredible night sky. This will increase our chances of seeing natural phenomenons like shooting stars, the milky way or the northern lights.
